Daring Discovery Centre
Our multidisciplinary team was appointed by the Mangawhai Daring Trust to design an extension to the Mangawhai Museum to house ‘The Daring’ - a 53ft schooner built in 1863 which had been buried in the sands of Te Oneone Rangatira until 2018 when it was uncovered by a storm. Since 2021 she has been kept in temporary accommodation adjacent to the Mangawhai Museum, where dedicated volunteers monitor and aid her preservation. The long term preservation of this significant piece of New Zealand maritime history requires a purpose built building whereby the internal temperature and humidity can be carefully controlled. In addition to the environmental requirements for preservation, the new space will function as an education centre - providing interactive and engaging exhibits, catering for school visits and the wider public.
Our team was involved in its entirety from the outset and has taken geotechnical, civil, structural and architectural design through from the concept to the preparation of a building consent package.
‘From the start of the design process, we found the team at HG very easy to deal with, and they completely understood our design brief. The design work and engineering was all done to budget, and it was great to be dealing with a company that had full in house experts. I have no hesitation in recommending them to other clients.’
