Proposed Building Consent Exemptions
As recently publicised, the government has added to the building consent exemptions allowed under Schedule 1 of the Building Act.
The area for stand alone buildings, such as sleep-outs or sheds will increase from 10m² to 30m², while carports will increase from 20m² to 40m². Ground floor awnings, verandas and porches will increase from 20m² to 30m². As always, all building work must comply with the Building Code, and while some of the exemptions may be carried out by anyone, most will be required to have the design carried out or reviewed by a Chartered Professional Engineer, or have the design and construction carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP.)
Most of the new exemptions are expected to come into effect at the end of August, while the new exemptions for LBPs will start once changes are made to the Building Act. Further information relating to the proposed exemptions may be found here, while the full MBIE guidance document for current exemptions under Schedule 1 may be found here.
