This project involved the removal of an existing house and excavations to accommodate a larger purpose-built mental health unit to provide clients with accommodation in a home-like situation. The solution was a large scale house with added design considerations such as a secure office for staff and accessible bathrooms. The site is on a hill-side and therefore required significant cutting into the bank with timber retaining walls to create a building platform. The unit is constructed from concrete slab on ground with light timber frame walls and roof. The wall cladding is brick veneer for low maintenance, and the roof cladding is longrun profiled metal.
Hawthorn Geddes’ involvement provided developed design, working drawings, tender administration, contract administration and observation, geotechnical, civil and structural engineering.
